African Americans, per census data, make up about 13% of the population. However, only 5.4 % of physicians are African American (2.6% Black men and 2.8% Black women). Underrepresentation is an issue affecting our community.  Health disparities plague our communities with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. In addition, multiple barriers to care including issues with access to care, being uninsured or under-insured, high unemployment, and cultural differences worsen the plight of African Americans. When the pandemic began in 2020, the gap widened even more as access worsened. Telemedicine became a platform that increased exponentially to keep patients connected to physicians for their care. However, our personal experience and statistics show that this relatively new mode of care is disproportionately not as widely used and/or accepted in the black community. Several factors including distrust for the healthcare system, skepticism regarding confidentiality in care via a tele-visit, lack of exposure, and lack of insurance impact access to healthcare via telemedicine.  We aim to provide compassionate and competent care to all. Due to the health disparities in our community, we also specifically aim to provide a platform to connect African American patients with board certified African American physicians via Telemedicine with the goal of improving the health of our community.
